The average total precipitation recorded in Kingston (over the past 35 years) for the month of November is 94.5 mm. The extreme daily rainfall event recorded for November was 59 mm on November 29, 1987. However, that record may have been broken yesterday November 16, a day of extremely heavy rain when an unusual low pressure system resulted in a number of incidents of flooding around the Kingston area. Environment Canada has not released figures yet but their estimates indicate as much as 60 mm of rain fell yesterday. The result here at the Mill is as seen in the latest 'Mill view' photo at top left, taken from the master bedroom window this morning. The race, which ran for about 10 days from October 30th and shut off early last week started up again yesterday evening. My estimate of the current raceway flow is approximately 200 cubic feet per second.
Anyone interested in how the Mill stands up in these extreme conditions will be happy to note that all habitable levels of the Mill including the Batcave (ie the Mill machinery level) have remained bone dry, although the water is up to about 8 feet below ground level in the Dungeon machinery pit below the Batcave. The tail race pond is flowing strongly as it has been since September. The lower lawns are dry. What was that??!!? Thanks for coming back back to the Mill website. It is my intention to post regular Mill news with items that people hopefully find interesting. On that note, please see the second two photos - 'What was that?' and 'What was that too?'. With winter approaching, there is a lot of wildlife action in the conservation area to the West of the Mill and even on the fringes of the property itself. One of the beauties of the Mill is that almost every day is a lesson in natural history of one kind or another. These two photos were taken recently on the Western path in the wooded area near the tailrace pond (the Eastern bridge and the pond are visible in the second photo). Pluto is very curious about what might have made the 'deposit' near his feet, as was the Miller. The answer will surprise you as it surprised me.
Please send your guesses by return e-mail – anyone who gets it right will win a drink with the Miller the next time you visit the Mill. (Okay, the Miller is just looking for an excuse to have a drink with a visitor). Please feel free to write back with questions and comments (as well as your guesses). Anything of general interest will be posted here on the Mill website.
